The old fucker’s done it again. Donald Trump has reportedly given the green light to military action against Iran following an emergency meeting in the White House Situation Room today, dragging us all back to his playground of reckless foreign policy decisions.

What Exactly Happened Today

According to Sky News, Trump was “making final decision” decisions in the Situation Room after what appears to have been a dramatic afternoon session. This isn’t some former president mouthing off on the golf course or at a rally – this is active military planning. The timing suggests something urgent prompted this intervention, though we’re not told exactly what triggered the emergency meeting.

The White House Situation Room is where presidents make war decisions. It’s where Obama sat when Osama bin Laden was killed, where Bush waited on September 11th. For Trump to be back in there actively making military calls suggests either the current administration called him in as some kind of national security consultant, or he’s somehow inserted himself into the chain of command. Both possibilities are absolutely terrifying.

The Key Players in This Mess

Obviously Trump himself is centre stage here, but we’re not told who else was in the room. Was it current National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan? Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin? Or is this some shadow foreign policy operation run from Mar-a-Lago? The lack of detail in the reporting tells me this might be developing very quickly – or that someone’s being deliberately opaque about Trump’s actual role.

Iran’s leadership will certainly be watching their phones nervously tonight. Supreme Leader Khamenei has spent years building up his forces in the Persian Gulf, and Trump’s unpredictable nature makes him impossible to read. One minute he’s threatening nuclear war, the next he’s inviting the mullahs to Camp David for a burger.

Trump’s War History With Iran

We’ve been here before, haven’t we? When Trump killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in January 2020, the world held its breath waiting to see if Tehran would retaliate. They did, shooting down a Ukrainian passenger jet and launching missiles at Iraqi bases housing American troops. Trump called it “doing great” even as families grieved.

He tore up the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, claiming it was “the worst deal ever made.” Then he spent three years trying to get Iran back to negotiating table. Now, with tensions rising again in the Gulf, Trump seems ready to escalate once more. The man has never met a red line he couldn’t cross for attention.

The Kennedy Center Controversy

While Trump plots military adventures, a federal judge has ordered his name removed from Washington’s Kennedy Center, according to the BBC. The performing arts venue had apparently honoured Trump in some way – perhaps a performance hall or commemorative plaque – and now a court has decided that association damages the institution’s reputation.

This is rich, really. The same man who normalised meeting Kim Jong-un in North Korea and who literally tried to buy Greenland now can’t keep his name on a cultural building in his own capital. The Kennedy Center board must have decided that honouring a man who tried to overturn an election wasn’t worth the bother.

Former Attorney General Barr’s Epstein File Problems

Adding to the day’s legal drama, Trump’s former Attorney General William Barr has admitted to “redaction errors” in Jeffrey Epstein files during closed-door testimony. Barr, who oversaw the initial handling of those documents, now claims mistakes were made in how sensitive information was obscured.

This is bollocks, frankly. Either Barr is genuinely incompetent – which wouldn’t surprise me given his performance as Attorney General – or there’s something more sinister going on. The Epstein case has haunted Trump for years, with wild conspiracy theories circulating about his connection to the convicted sex offender. These “errors” will only fuel that speculation.

International Consequences

The Middle East is already a tinderbox. Israel and Hezbollah are exchanging fire across the Lebanese border. Iran-backed militias in Iraq have been conducting raids on American positions. If Trump is indeed authorising strikes against Iranian targets, we could see retaliation within hours.

Oil markets will react instantly. Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of the world’s petroleum passes. Any military action there sends prices soaring and makes your heating bills more expensive. The economic consequences will hit ordinary families hardest, as always.

My Take: This Cannot Stand

A former president does not get to make military decisions. Full stop. Joe Biden was elected to command the armed forces, not Donald Trump. If there’s a genuine threat requiring immediate action, that’s fine – but Trump’s involvement smacks of political opportunism.

The man is running for president again in 2024. Using military action as a campaign prop is beneath contempt. We saw this playbook in 2020 – create a crisis, then position yourself as the only person who can “solve” it. It’s authoritarian tactics wrapped in conservative rhetoric, and the American people deserve better than this shitshow.

Congress needs to establish immediately what authority Trump has in these matters. The Pentagon needs to clarify its chain of command. And frankly, someone in the White House press team needs to stop these alarming headlines before they trigger World War Three.
